Ikerbasque, the Basque Foundation for Science, was created in 2007 by the Basque Government to strengthen the Basque Science System through programmes aimed at attracting, consolidating and retaining excellent researchers. Ikerbasque researchers carry out their scientific activity in universities and research centres throughout the Basque Country. The Foundation plays a central role in promoting scientific excellence, supporting international research talent and reinforcing the research capacities of the Basque Country. Its strategic objectives include attracting and developing scientific talent, strengthening research centres of excellence, promoting science in society, and fostering innovation and knowledge transfer. At the end of 2025, Ikerbasque brought together 417 research professionals, including established researchers, young research leaders and research associates. During that year, Ikerbasque researchers secured more than €49 million in research funding and contributed to 1,726 articles in high-impact indexed international journals.
